This guide explains how to connect Coalesce Quality to MySQL or MariaDB securely.We need this information so we can collect metadata about your tables.To be able to finish this guide, you’ll need the following:

Data we collect

We read metadata from information_schema using the dedicated user described below:
  • Catalog: databases, tables, views, columns, data types and comments.
  • SQL definitions: the query of each view, and the CREATE statement of each table from SHOW CREATE TABLE. Used for lineage.
  • Constraints: primary keys, unique keys, indexes, foreign keys and checks.
  • Table metrics: row counts and the time of the last change, from information_schema.TABLES.
information_schema lists only the objects the user holds a privilege on, so Coalesce Quality sees the databases you grant below and nothing else.

Create a dedicated user

Replace % with the address Coalesce Quality connects from if you restrict users by host. See IP Whitelist.

Grant access to each database

Run this for every database you want Coalesce Quality to monitor:
  • SELECT lets the user see the database’s tables in information_schema and run SHOW CREATE TABLE. It also lets Custom SQL monitors and SQL tests read rows.
  • SHOW VIEW lets the user read each view’s definition, in information_schema.VIEWS and with SHOW CREATE VIEW. Without it, views are listed without their definition.

MariaDB

Coalesce Quality detects MariaDB and reads it the same way, with the same grants. The rest of this guide applies to MariaDB unchanged.

Network Configuration

If your MySQL instance is behind a firewall or has network access controls, you may need to whitelist Coalesce Quality’s IP addresses. See IP Whitelist for the complete list of IP addresses by region.

Integration name

E.g., mysql

Host and port

The hostname of your server, e.g., cluster-name.us-east-1.rds.amazonaws.com, and its port. The default is 3306.

Username and password

The user you created above.

Audit table FQN (optional)

Fully qualified name (database.table) of the table where Coalesce Quality writes SQL test audit logs. Coalesce Quality creates the table if it does not exist, so the user needs CREATE and INSERT on that database. Leave empty if you don’t run SQL tests.

Catalog scope and Metrics scope (optional)

Restrict which databases and tables are ingested into the catalog, and which of those are scanned for metrics. Leave both empty to ingest everything the user can see.
